‘If you are a Company (a Co.) then you must be rich!’ — This interpretation is wrong and illogical!

What about a business firm with a ‘Co.’ suffixed to the name?

What do you expect of it?

Here is a long-standing misconception by ordinary folks.

A business company composed of two persons

Here is a business partnership composed of two businessmen still new in the business world. The partners are not rich individually. The name of their business partnership as registered in Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is D’Borg Publishing Co. D’borg. Publishing Co. is not yet a rich business firm since it is newly formed. Ironically, some people who come in contact with any of the partners would tongue-in-cheekly ask the partner the following:

  1. Why don’t you own a car? Why do you commute as you process your business?
  2. Why are you not in coat and tie?
  3. Why do you get your documents printed here at the computer shop? Do you not own a big office where there are computers and printers?
  4. Etcetera

Interpretation by inquisitiveness of some ordinary folks or laypeople

The inquisitiveness of these fellows shows that they are wondering why the partners and the partnership look poor when the business firm is a “Publishing Co.” It’s a company and so they interpret that it has to be rich; and the partners, rich-looking.

False basis of the inquisitiveness

The inquisitiveness springs from a misconception that a company being with “Co.” in its business name is supposed to be high-end. This ignorance fails to realize that a “Co.” is a legal requirement to be attached to the name of a partnership for business without regard as to whether the business firm or its partners are rich or poor. The misconception is a logical fallacy basing the conclusion from the generally observed image of a company being usually rich. That conclusion is drawn from the effect of the establishment of a company (becoming rich) and not the reason for the establishment as legally required.

What should you rightly expect of a business company?

A company and its partners may be poor yet it is called “Co.”

Logical advice

Do interpret what a legal thing/concept/entity is NOT according to its social complexion or appearance, but what it is according to the elements or requirements it needs to possess in order to exist. Just like there are newly established cities that do not have lots of high-rise buildings and high-end facilities yet. Eventually, such cities will boast of such sightings as progress may go on. The legal requirements for one place to be made a city is not because you can already see those facilities, amenities and infrastructure. Instead, the legal requirements are those with regard to number of population, land area and income.
